The theme of the 2008 conference is “Occupational Health Forensics – Analysing the Evidence to make a difference”. Over the past five years television programmes about criminal investigations have become widely popular. In response to this universities are offering an increasing number of science courses that incorporate “forensic” into their titles. Our goal is to motivate and inspire those attending the conference by highlighting how the work of an occupational hygienist parallels that of a police forensic scientist: similar approaches to the identification, collection and analysis of samples, legal compliance and excellent communication are essential for both professions. As a hygienist’s investigation also has the potential to end up in the judicial system so it should be rigorous and robust enough to withstand legal scrutiny.

However, while police forensic science is limited to investigation of past events, the primary aim of occupational hygiene is prevention of harm. Through our conference programme we hope to introduce new techniques and approaches to current issues or outline emerging issues that impact the health of workers.

The key areas of focus include; hazard identification, collection of exposure data, health risk assessment, and investigation (risk assessment), legislative compliance, intervention and control of workplace exposures, emergency response, and effective stakeholder communication. These topics will be addressed by a range of national and international experts at plenary, workshop and continuing education sessions.
