Welcome note from the chairperson - Martin Jennings
It is my very great pleasure to invite you to attend the 27th Annual Conference of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH), to be held in Canberra, December 5th – 9th, 2009. It is now eleven years since the conference was last held in the national capital – the meeting place of the nation. So, it is appropriate that the venue is back at the National Convention Centre. The theme of the 2009 conference is “New and Emerging Issues”, and we are featuring a number of CESs, and papers from authors which address this theme. The conference is showcasing some leading experts in their field, presenting CESs and plenary papers and this is a great opportunity to learn from them. We also have a very full program of concurrent session papers and a poster display, which delegates will find address specific areas of interest to them.
There will be a full social program, which includes the high point of the Conference, the Dinner which will be held in the Great Hall of Parliament House. All the major awards are presented at the Dinner and it is timely to remind all those intending to participate in the conference of the generosity of the sponsor’s awards, and to keep an eye on this website for announcements about the awards. Another great traditional social event, the 3M Night has the theme “3M Race Night” and I for one will be looking forward to seeing what some of our more creatively minded delegates will be making of that! The Golf Day, is being capably organized by perhaps the most qualified person to handle this, John ‘Hendo’ Henderson, and this is to be held at Gold Creek Golf Club.
One thing about the National Convention Centre, unlike hotel venues, is that it has plenty of space. So, this conference committee is aiming to attract more exhibitors than ever before to fill the Exhibition Hall. Some exhibitors will be well known to delegates from previous conferences, but there will also be a number of new faces, together with new products or services to see.
As a committee, we are only too aware that the current financial crisis may make people think twice about attending. However, we think that this still represents great value for money. The price of the conference remains unchanged at the same level it has been for five years and there is a range of accommodation options available to meet all budgets.
The benefits include keeping bang up to date, meeting with some of the leading practitioners in the field, professional certification points and a great social program for more informal networking. All we need is you, the delegate to come along and to actively participate in the conference. Can you really afford to NOT attend?
