to understand the extent of making sensible measurements in the workplace. Complex statistical treatment is avoided and readers with a good calculator and basic arithmetical skills should be able to apply the simple statistical procedures.
- Heat Stress Standard & Documentation Developed for Use in the Australian Environment

The human body must maintain its internal temperature within a very narrow range to achieve a state of well being. The actual level of this temperature is a function of the balance between heat exchange with the external thermal environment and the generation of heat internally by the metabolic processes associated with life and activity. Heat stress is the net heat load to which a worker may be exposed from the combined contributions of metabolic cost of work, environmental factors (i.e., air temperature, humidity, air movement and radiant heat exchange) and clothing requirements. The effects of excessive heat exposures can upset this balance and result in a compromise of safety, efficiency and productivity losses, which precede more serious heat injuries. The effects of exposure to heat may range from a level of discomfort through to a life threatening condition such as heat stroke.
This standard is concerned only with health considerations and not those associated with comfort. The Heat Stress Standard provides guidance in the form of a decision-making process, based on available scientific data (as presented in Documentation included in this booklet), by which such a decision is reached and applied. A tiered risk assessment approach is recommended, starting with a Basic Thermal Risk Assessment, escalating through a detailed analysis using rational methods such as the Predictive Heat Strain index, to heat-strain (physiological) monitoring.

The purpose of this guideline is to provide readers with an overview of the current status in respect to diesel particulate and to provide guidance on proven monitoring and control technologies for the workplace. Much of the basic investigative work has been reported from overseas studies and considerable refinement and successful application have been made in Australian industry over the last 15 years, and this is presented and referenced in this document. As the underground mining industry has been the focus of much research (due to potentially higher exposures), much of the detail of this document is mining based, however application to other industrial situations should, in most cases, be similar.

For the occupational hygienist, exposure assessment and risk assessment cannot be reasonably separated. For this reason, this Guidebook is a companion guide with the Simplified Monitoring Strategies Guidebook, also published by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH).

Dennis J. Paustenbach, Ph.D., CIH, DABT - Dr Dennis Paustenbach is President of ChemRisk, a human and ecological risk assessment consulting firm with three offices nationwide. He was previously President of McLaren-Hart, a 600 person consulting environmental engineering firm and was a Vice President at Exponent (formerly Failure Analysis Associates). He was the founder of ChemRisk, the largest risk-assessment consulting firm in the U.S. during the 1990’s and has resurrected the firm as of June 2003. He earned a BS in Chemical Engineering, an MS in industrial hygiene/toxicology, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology. He is board-certified in toxicology, industrial hygiene, and safety and has more than 20 years of experience in risk assessment, environmental engineering, ecotoxicology, and occupational health. Dennis has specialized in exposure assessment and dose reconstruction for much of the past 15 years and has published about 40 articles and 7 book chapters on the topic. He has presented guest lectures and short courses on exposure assessment throughout the United States and at least five other countries. He has been an adjunct professor at several universities and was a visiting scholar at the Center for Risk Analysis at Harvard. Dennis has directed consulting activities for nearly 700 risk assessments and has published more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts in this and related fields.
