It’s a classic cautionary tale in occupational hygiene; make sure when you substitute a hazardous material, you aren’t introducing another more serious hazard. This case study will look at a real-world scenario from recognition and evaluation of hexavalent chromium occurrence in the exhaust systems of a mining heavy vehicle fleet, to what controls have been implemented, what controls are still being investigated, and what the ideal solution would look like.

Respirable Crystalline Silica – what now?

Australia’s silicosis story over the past few years has been shocking, difficult to navigate and full of unexpected hurdles. Hundreds of workers have been diagnosed with silicosis and silica-related auto-immune diseases, the workplace exposure standard has been reviewed and reduced, the National Dust Diseases Taskforce has provided its recommendations, measurement issues have been the centre of every occupational hygienist’s dinner conversations; and now there is a prohibition hurtling the engineered stone sector towards the end of a very short transitional period.

So, what is next? How are these regulatory changes (and how they are being implemented in different parts of the country) going to affect the work of occupational hygienists, the clients we provide advice to and the workers who may have been and may still be exposed? And what hurdles are still before us?
