Attaining the status of Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)® is the pinnacle of the Occupational Hygiene profession in Australia.
A Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)® status is recognition of a professionally competent, independent & ethical practitioner and an industry leader.
Certification is an internationally recognised badge of competence, benchmarked with standards applicable in other parts of the world.
The reward for becoming a COH is the personal satisfaction of knowing you have achieved the highest standard in Australia and you are recognised for your knowledge and experience by professional industry peers and colleagues.
Members who achieve this status are entitled to use the post-nominals COH.
Members who have attained Certification have:
completed relevant tertiary studies
been working in the field of occupational hygiene or one of its specialist branches for more than five years in a professional capacity
demonstrated to the AIOH Council that they have achieved a satisfactory level of professional knowledge and competence through successful completion of an oral examination
continue to demonstrate an an ongoing commitment to excellence and maintaining their professional currency through ongoing professional development
MAIOH is a post nominal that defines the AIOH Member as a Full Member of The Institute. Members that have reached this level of membership are entitled to use these post nominals after their name. eg: John Smith MAIOH
FAIOH is a post nominal that defines the AIOH Member as a Fellow Member of The Institute. Members that have reached this level of membership are entitled to use these post nominals after their name. eg: Jane Smith FAIOH
The qualifications requirements for admission to the professional grades are specified in AIOH Rules 6.2.1(a) and 6.2.2(a). These rules state that the candidate must “have a first degree or diploma in Science or Engineering acceptable to the Council, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Council”.
Qualifications acceptable to Council as satisfying the requirements of AIOH Rules 6.2.1(a) and 6.2.2(a) shall include:
• Physical sciences, applied sciences, or engineering qualifications meeting the requirements of AQF Level 7 and above.
• An internationally recognised qualification equivalent to AQF Level 7 and above.
• Certification under a NAR Accredited IOHA society.
• An AIOH Accredited Course.
• OHTA International Certificate in Occupational Hygiene (ICertOH).
The social sciences are not considered to be qualifying sciences.
If questions are raised regarding the suitability of qualifications, they will be referred to the Professional Development and Education Committee for a determination.
Where an applicant for admission to a professional membership grade does not have qualifications meeting the above-mentioned requirements, Council may consider the applicant’s existing qualifications in conjunction with experience and demonstrated competence in order to assess whether the applicant satisfies the requirements of AIOH Rules 6.2.1(a) or 6.2.2(a). As a guide, satisfactory experience may be substituted on the basis of three years of qualifying experience for one year of undergraduate education.
An applicant for Provisional or Full Membership not having a science or engineering degree or tertiary qualification with the quantitative science content outlined above, may be considered if the qualifications they have, in conjunction with their experience and demonstrated competence, are considered qualifications that may be acceptable to Council.
An applicant may be granted Provisional Membership or an interview for Full Membership as the case may be, if the applicant:
has qualifications or has completed short courses, in occupational hygiene, or occupational hygiene related areas, and;
can demonstrate, via their reports, a sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge and skills for Provisional Membership or for Full Membership.
The required level of experience for Provisional Membership is 1 year with greater than 50% of the role working in the field of occupational hygiene or one of its specialist branches. For Full Membership the required level of experience is 5 years with greater than 50% of the role working in the field of occupational hygiene or one of its specialist branches per year.
Yes, on the basis that at least fifty per cent (50%) of your working time is, or has been as the case may be, directly involved with occupational hygiene over a minimum 5 year period. For example, an HSE Manager who was a full time occupational hygienist in the past can apply for Full Membership.
For Full membership, two (2) references are required that attest to applicant’s ‘satisfactory level of professional competence’.
For Provisional Membership, one (1) reference is required that attests to applicant’s ‘acceptable level of understanding of basic principles of occupational hygiene.
Applicants should choose referees who are sufficiently close to the work of the applicant that he/she can confidently attest to their personal knowledge of applicant’s hygiene experience.
Referees must lend their name and Membership status in support of the applicant, and declare any Conflict of Interest in the application. Referees may be contacted regarding the references they have provided to the AIOH as part of the application assessment process.
A reference template is available on the AIOH web site and its use is preferred since it ensures referees address the criteria.
It is preferred that at least 1 referee is a Full or Fellow member of the AIOH. However, it is recognised that some applicants may have valid reasons for not being able to nominate a referee who is a Full or Fellow member of the AIOH; this will be taken into account during the assessment on a case by case basis.
While technical reports are not a mandatory requirement and there are a number of ways to demonstrate professional competence (i.e. references, reports, interviews), reports are useful in demonstrating that a successful level of professional competence has been achieved. It is therefore recommended that reports are submitted with all applications: one (1) report for Provisional Membership application, and; two (2) reports for Full Membership application.
Technical reports submitted to the AIOH should de-identify workers and workplaces and be structured to align with the AIOH Report Writing Guideline (available on the AIOH website).
Technical reports should demonstrate the applicant’s practical occupational hygiene problem solving competence appropriate to the grade being sought, using the basic occupational hygiene principles of anticipation, recognition, evaluation (e.g. by monitoring or data gathering and comparison against recognised health or engineering based standards), and control (i.e. recommendation of exposure controls aligned with the Hierarchy of Controls).
For Provisional Membership applications, reports should contain no technical errors and demonstrate a good working knowledge of recognition and evaluation. Limited control knowledge is required.
For Full Membership applications, demonstration of a high level of occupational hygiene competence is required, including the provision of advice on the interpretation of relevant legislation and control requirements that are derived from any of the gathered monitoring or data.
It is expected that reports contain sufficient detail to give the reader a clear explanation of the exposure scenario, why exposure monitoring is required, how it was performed and evaluated (including any limitations) and what action is required, if any. Generally speaking, brief reports offering little or no explanation or interpretation do not meet the requirements.
Applicants are advised not to submit reports:
Without interpretation of sampling results
Without discussion of the range of potential controls such as policy documents, management plans or hazardous materials surveys unless they specifically demonstrate REC.
Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel are a special case: their applications are assessed in a specific assessment process, which acknowledges that for reasons of national security, technical reports may not be released
Routine hazardous materials audit reports and asbestos surveys have very little professional interpretation of results and do not demonstrate recognition, evaluation and control acceptable for evaluation of an applicant for Full or Provisional membership.
Published papers, lecture notes, company procedures and policies of a generic nature can be submitted but must be accompanied by a statement detailing the proportion and nature of the contribution of the applicant. Similarly, a thesis can be accepted but must be accompanied by a statement from the applicant and from their thesis supervisor detailing the proportion and nature of the contribution of the applicant.
Submission of technical Reports is not mandatory butthey can assist in determining the level of competence of an applicant. Qualifications, experience and strong references may be sufficient of themselves to satisfy Rule 6.2.1(d) or 6.2.2 (d) to demonstrate to Council that a professional level of competence has been achieved.
Provisional Membership: if Council is satisfied that that your application meets the criteria for Provisional Membership, you will be offered this level of membership. Alternatively, if Council is not satisfied that your application meets the criteria, you will be sent correspondence outlining the specific criteria which you did not meet and suggesting a relevant course of action.
Full Membership, if Council is satisfied that your application meets the criteria fully, you will be offered Full membership. If Council is not satisfied that your application meets the criteria, and depending on the nature of any deficiency you may be asked to undertake an interview; otherwise, otherwise you will be sent correspondence outlining which criteria you specifically did not meet.
At your request, a teleconference with a member of the M&Q committee can be arranged to provide additional feedback on your application.
This is dependent upon how many applications are currently being assessed. If applications are received in a complete state, the committee aims to review within 8 weeks. If applications are not complete and require additional information or reports, then the process can take several more weeks.
The interview is conducted by two Full or Fellow members of the Institute. A third person may be present as an observer but they will take no active part in the interview. The interview is expected to take approximately one to two hours and will include discussion about the following:
The applicant’s present position
The professional activities the applicant is involved in
The applicant’s understanding of the principles of occupational hygiene including topics such as use of information sources, interpretation of data, design of occupational hygiene surveys, and use and interpretation of exposure standards.
Contact with the profession
The applicant’s understanding of legislation and how it applies to Occupational Hygiene
Committees (Chaired or member)
Journals/books scanned (either hard copy or via internet access)
The applicant’s level of experience in each of the following areas will be discussed and graded against four (4) of the following areas (nominated by the candidate), or the candidate’s nominated specialist area of expertise:
Correspondence outlining the reason why you were not successful will be emailed to you, which will provide further advice, including an offer for a mentor. A teleconference with a member of the M&Q committee can be arranged to obtain more detailed feedback on your interview at your request. You can reapply after a minimum 12 months based on the professional development you have undertaken and advice provided by your mentor.
If your already a member and know your about to go on Maternity Leave, you will need to contact your Membership Coordinator via email (email@example.com) before the expiry of your membership. You are able to submit an email request to Council to suspend your membership for up to 12 months. You must be a financial active member and Council must endorse this request before suspension is accepted.
