Quartz – Updated hazard classification
17th Mar 17
Safe Work Australia’s Hazardous Chemical Information System (HCIS) provides information on the classification of common substances. The classification for quartz was updated in December 2016 following a NICNAS assessment. The classification gives the quartz respirable fraction the hazard classifications Specific target organ toxicity (repeated exposure) – category 1 and Carcinogenicity – category 1A. Importers or manufacturers of workplace hazardous chemicals containing respirable fraction quartz should review their classification, labels and SDS. Guidance on assessing the respirable fraction of quartz is available in the EU standard “Size-Weighted Potential Respirable Fraction of Crystalline Silica – SweRFcs (2012).
