Found in ever increasing applications, lithium batteries are commonplace. From consumer electronics, passenger and heavy vehicles, through the Battery Energy Storage Systems occupying large areas, lithium batteries play important roles in daily life. Yet increasingly, when failures of these devices occur, there is a rapid electrochemical breakdown leading to release of toxic and flammable vapours, with at times explosive results.
Craig and Paul discuss an overview of lithium battery incidents, with notable cases studies, occupational hygiene monitoring considerations, reviewing the environmental and physiological impacts of exposure to constituents of the thermal breakdown of lithium batteries.
