Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.  In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

Job Description

We’re seeking a seasoned Occupational Hygienist to join our team at Aquila Underground Mine in a full-time, permanent role. Your strong communication skills, strategic planning ability, and problem-solving mindset will be instrumental in driving our commitment to health and safety. In this role, you’ll provide expert technical advice and proactive support to manage occupational hygiene risks and opportunities across the site.

Your responsibilities will include the following, not limited to:

  • Ensure compliance with the site’s annual hygiene hazard monitoring program
  • Identify exposure groups at risk and develop targeted exposure reduction plans
  • Assess and control actual or potential occupational hygiene risks
  • Fulfil the role of the site’s Hazardous Chemical Coordinator
  • Provide technical guidance and support on occupational hygiene matters
  • Contribute to the delivery of the site’s safety and health strategy
  • Oversee third-party occupational hygiene service providers
  • Implement a comprehensive site-wide hygiene training and awareness program
  • Maintain the respiratory protection program
  • Develop and update safety and health management system documentation related to hygiene
  • Collaborate closely with operational teams, offering coaching and support as needed

Your deep professional expertise and well-honed interpersonal skills will enable you to mentor and influence others, helping position Anglo American as a leader in occupational hygiene performance across the industry.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Occupational Hygiene or a related Environmental / Health Science field (mandatory)
  • 3 years’ relevant field experience in a similar role (desirable)
  • Contribute to Implementing WHS Monitoring Processes course (BSBWHS419) (desirable)
  • Conversant in Queensland coal mining Recognised Standards 14, 15, 16 & 20
  • Demonstrable knowledge in implementing an Occupational Hygiene Monitoring Plan
  • Be recognised and hold the title of a Certified Occupational Hygienist (desirable)
  • Full membership with the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (desirable)
  • Recognised qualifications in Safety & Health Management Systems advantageous (i.e., S1,2,3; G3; G2,)
  • A sound knowledge of Queensland legislative requirements as well as Australian Mining & Resources sector experience

  • Permanent, full-time position
  • Monday to Friday site role with 9-day fortnight available
