AIOH is introducing an updated application process for Provisional and Full Membership from 1 February 2027.
The updated process is designed to provide clearer guidance for applicants, recognise different pathways to Professional Membership, and make it easier to understand the information and evidence required as part of an application.
Whether you are considering applying for Provisional Membership, progressing from Provisional to Full Membership, or applying directly for Full Membership, this page will help you understand what is changing and the important dates during the transition.
10 December 2026Current Provisional and Full Membership applications close.
15 December 2026The updated 2027 Membership Guidelines become available. You can review the requirements and start preparing your application.
1 February 2027The new Provisional and Full Membership application process opens.
From 2027, applicants will have clearer information about the requirements and pathways available for Professional Membership. Changes include:
For practitioners developing their occupational hygiene knowledge and professional experience.
This is the first of the professional grades within the AIOH.
Membership at this level enables persons to identify themselves as occupational hygienists.
Provisional Members must meet the following requirements:
For experienced occupational hygiene practitioners who meet the requirements for Full Membership.
Membership at this level enables occupational hygienists to use the post-nominals MAIOH.
Full Members must meet the following requirements:
Full Members must be able to demonstrate to Council that a satisfactory level of professional competence has been achieved.
AIOH is transitioning to an updated Professional Membership application and assessment process for 2027. The temporary closure gives us time to implement the new application forms, online reference process, supporting information and internal assessment processes before applications reopen.
There are a number of steps involved in reviewing a Professional Membership application, from the initial application and supporting evidence through to referee feedback, assessment by the Membership Development Sub-Committee and final approval. We want to make sure each part of the new process is properly tested and working as intended before it is introduced.
Applications under the current Provisional and Full Membership process will close on 10 December 2026. The current application forms will cease to be available from this date, and new applications cannot be submitted until the updated process opens on 1 February 2027.
Yes, now is a great time to apply if you meet the current criteria.
The core requirements for Provisional and Full Membership are not changing, so if you meet the current requirements, you can submit your application under the existing process before 10 December 2026.
We particularly encourage existing Provisional Members who have held this membership level for four years or more to review the Full Membership requirements and consider whether they may now be ready to progress to Full Membership (MAIOH).
We recommend reviewing the current Membership Guidelines before applying to make sure you can provide the required information and supporting documentation.
Short answer, yes!
If you have continued to develop your occupational hygiene experience and believe you now meet the requirements for Full Membership, we encourage you to review the current Membership Guidelines and consider applying before 10 December 2026.
Under the current process, existing Provisional Members applying to upgrade to Full Membership are required to provide an updated work history and two professional references as part of their application.
From 1 February 2027, the Full Membership application and assessment process will be more comprehensive, with applicants required to provide additional information and supporting evidence against the updated Membership Guidelines.
If you believe you are ready to progress, now is a good time to review the current requirements and consider taking the next step to becoming a MAIOH.
Yes, there will be some changes to the requirements for both Provisional and Full Membership, including some new mandatory requirements.
For Provisional Membership, the updated Guidelines will provide greater flexibility to support applicants entering the professional membership pathway. For Full Membership, additional pathways will recognise different combinations of education, professional development and occupational hygiene experience.
A key change is that all Full Membership applications will undergo a more comprehensive assessment, including a review of qualifications, work history and professional references.
The updated Guidelines will provide the full requirements and pathways from 15 December 2026.
Yes. This is a common misconception. You do not need to hold Provisional Membership before applying for Full Membership.
If you have five or more years of professional experience, with at least 50% of your work involving occupational hygiene activities, and you meet the qualification requirements, you can apply directly for Full Membership. This applies under the current process as well as the new process.
Provisional Membership is intended for those earlier in their professional pathway, generally with one to five years of occupational hygiene experience. If you already meet the requirements for Full Membership, AIOH encourages you to apply at the level that reflects your experience and qualifications.
Applications submitted before the closing date will continue through the current application and assessment process.
Applicants need reassurance that their application doesn't disappear when applications close. We can explain that applications received before the closure will continue through the current assessment process.
Professional Membership applications can take up to six weeks to complete, provided all required information and supporting documentation has been received.
Your application is independently reviewed by three members of the Membership Development Sub-Committee. The assessment is then reviewed by the Sub-Committee Lead before a recommendation is submitted to AIOH Council for ratification.
If additional information is required, or your application is referred to an interview, the assessment may take longer. Interview timing will depend on the availability of an appropriate interview panel.
We encourage applicants to provide all required information at the time of application to help avoid unnecessary delays.
New Provisional and Full Membership applications will open on 1 February 2027. The updated Membership Guidelines will be available from 15 December 2026, giving prospective applicants time to review the requirements and prepare their application.
Not necessarily. If you believe you meet the current criteria for Provisional or Full Membership, we encourage you to review the current Membership Guidelines and consider applying before applications close on 10 December 2026.
The Membership Development Sub-Committee assesses the information and evidence provided by the applicant against the membership requirements, using a structured assessment guide to support a consistent and considered review.
Where an applicant does not fully meet the current requirements, the Sub-Committee will provide recommendations on the appropriate next steps.
The updated Membership Guidelines will be available from 15 December 2026, including the additional pathways being introduced for 2027.
You can still apply, however your application may need to follow an alternative assessment pathway, which may include an interview with the Membership Development Sub-Committee.
Your professional competency will also be assessed through the professional reports submitted with your application, together with your work history, referee information and other supporting evidence required under the Membership Guidelines.
Applicants who hold certification through an IOHA-recognised occupational hygiene certification scheme may also have a recognised pathway available under the Membership Guidelines.
The purpose of these additional assessment steps is to ensure the Sub-Committee has sufficient evidence to assess your professional knowledge, experience and competency where an AIOH Full or Fellow Member is not available to provide the required direct professional reference.
Y
The Membership Guidelines clearly set out the requirements for each professional membership level. Before applying, it is important to check that you meet the key requirements, particularly your qualifications, occupational hygiene work experience and referee requirements, including the required period your referees must have known you in a working capacity.
If you do not yet meet the requirements for Provisional or Full Membership, we encourage you to wait until you are eligible before applying, as the Membership Development Sub-Committee cannot approve applications that fall outside the required criteria.
In the meantime, consider the membership level that best reflects where you are in your career, such as Associate or Provisional Membership, and take advantage of AIOH membership, professional development and opportunities to connect with the occupational hygiene community as you build towards the next level.
If your application is assessed and you do not yet demonstrate all the requirements for the membership level applied for, the Membership Development Sub-Committee will provide recommendations outlining the areas that require further development.
This may include additional occupational hygiene experience, education or professional development, mentoring, or further evidence of your professional competence.
You will also be provided with information about the next steps, timeframe and reassessment process, so you have a clear understanding of what is required before your application can be reconsidered.
Not all Full Membership applicants will require an interview. Interviews form part of the assessment process for certain Full Membership pathways, or where the Membership Development Sub-Committee needs further information to assess an applicant's occupational hygiene knowledge and professional competence.
Interviews are conducted online, generally take around one hour, and are undertaken by two AIOH assessors. The discussion may cover your work history, professional experience and submitted reports, as well as your practical and technical understanding of occupational hygiene.
The interview is an opportunity to demonstrate the breadth and depth of your occupational hygiene knowledge and how you apply it in practice.
The updated Membership Guidelines will clearly identify the pathways and circumstances where an interview is required.
Full Membership interviews follow a structured assessment process, with assessors working through consistent areas of occupational hygiene knowledge, experience and professional competence. The outcome is based on the applicant's responses and the evidence demonstrated during the interview, rather than the opinion of an individual interviewer.
AIOH's interviewers and assessors are experienced members who volunteer their time to support the profession and the development of occupational hygienists. Their role is to assess applicants fairly against the Membership Guidelines and, where the required level has not yet been demonstrated, provide constructive recommendations to support further development.
We understand that an unsuccessful outcome can be disappointing. We ask applicants to respect the assessment process and the volunteers who contribute their time and professional expertise to it. Disrespectful or inappropriate behaviour towards AIOH interviewers, assessors or volunteers will not be accepted.
Where an applicant is unsuccessful following an interview, AIOH will provide feedback on the areas requiring further development and the next steps towards reassessment.
Student and Associate applications will remain open during the transition, however both are being updated.
The Associate Membership application will include more specific questions about your reason for joining AIOH and your experience in occupational hygiene. If you have been working in occupational hygiene for one year or more, we encourage you to review the Provisional Membership requirements and consider whether you may already qualify for a professional membership level.
The Student grade is available to eligible full-time or part-time students who are not working full-time. Applicants will need to provide proof of enrolment showing their course and expected completion date. This date will become the expiry date of the Student grade, at which time an upgrade to the appropriate membership level will be required.
Students undertaking an eligible AIOH-accredited occupational hygiene course may also qualify for the Student offering, subject to the applicable requirements and proof of enrolment.
There is no upfront application fee to apply for Provisional or Full Membership, including applications to upgrade your existing membership.
Fees are only payable once your application has been successfully approved. For existing members upgrading their membership, an administration upgrade fee will apply. While your application is being assessed, you must continue to pay your annual membership renewal to ensure your current membership does not lapse.
For new members who are successfully approved, AIOH will issue an invoice for the applicable administration joining fee and annual membership fee.
All successful applicants will have 28 days to accept their outcome and pay the applicable fees. If this is not completed within the 28-day period, the offer may lapse and you may be required to reapply.
Once approved and accepted, your membership will then form part of AIOH's annual membership renewal cycle, with membership fees payable each year to maintain your membership and professional grade.
Student and Associate applications have a different payment process. Associate applicants and part-time Student applicants are required to pay the applicable joining and membership fees upfront as part of their application. Once approved, the annual renewal requirements are the same as other AIOH membership levels, with renewal fees payable each year to maintain their membership or Student grade.
Full Membership is an important step towards AIOH Certification. You must be an AIOH Full Member to be considered for eligibility to sit the Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)® examination.
Following AIOH's successful renewal of its international National Accreditation Recognition (NAR) status in 2026, the COH Certification Policy has been updated to maintain alignment with international certification standards.
From 1 July 2028, additional eligibility requirements will apply based on the pathway through which an applicant achieved Full Membership. This includes minimum occupational hygiene experience requirements of five years for Pathway 1 and seven years for Pathway 2.
If COH Certification is part of your professional pathway, we encourage you to consider these future requirements when planning your progression to Full Membership.
If you are considering Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)® Certification, we encourage you to submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) early.
Places for the 2027 COH examination program are already close to capacity. Once available places are filled, a waitlist will be maintained.
From March 2027, new EOIs will be placed on the 2028 examination list. Candidates considering the 2028 program should also be aware of the updated COH eligibility requirements taking effect from 1 July 2028, including the new experience requirements associated with the Full Membership pathways.
Submitting an EOI does not guarantee an examination place or confirm eligibility. Candidates must meet the applicable Certification requirements, including holding AIOH Full Membership, before being considered to sit the COH examination.
AIOH uses structured assessment processes with defined requirements and criteria to support consistent and considered decision-making across its professional programs.
Assessments are undertaken by appropriately experienced members and volunteers relevant to the program. For example, Professional Membership applications are assessed by Full or Fellow Members of AIOH, Certification assessments involve Full or Fellow Members who hold the Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)® credential, and award assessments may include previous award recipients and other appropriately experienced representatives.
These volunteers contribute their professional knowledge, experience and time to ensure applications and submissions are given appropriate consideration against the requirements of the relevant program.
AIOH greatly values the contribution of its volunteer assessors and expects all interactions throughout an assessment process to remain professional and respectful, regardless of the outcome.
Under the current process, professional reports may be requested where an applicant is unable to provide the required professional reference from an AIOH Full or Fellow Member.
From 2027, professional reports will become a mandatory part of the Provisional and Full Membership application process. Provisional Membership will require one report and Full Membership will require two reports, prepared in accordance with the requirements set out in the Membership Guidelines.
Your application is assessed on the information and evidence you provide, not simply on your professional background or the assessors' knowledge of you. Reports provide important evidence of how you apply occupational hygiene principles in practice and help demonstrate your technical knowledge, professional judgement and competency. Providing clear, relevant and complete evidence makes it easier for the assessors to properly assess your application against the requirements of the membership level you are seeking.
Reports may be appropriately de-identified or redacted where they contain confidential or commercially sensitive information. Applicants remain responsible for obtaining any necessary permission before submitting workplace documentation to AIOH.
We understand that some applicants may have difficulty providing professional reports due to workplace confidentiality, client restrictions or the nature of their role.
Where possible, reports can be de-identified or appropriately redacted to remove confidential, personal or commercially sensitive information while retaining enough technical content for the Membership Development Sub-Committee to assess your occupational hygiene work and professional competency.
If you are genuinely unable to provide the required reports, this does not necessarily prevent you from applying. Your circumstances will be considered as part of the assessment process and an alternative assessment method, which may include a more detailed interview, may be required to demonstrate the necessary level of competency.
Applicants should provide as much relevant supporting evidence as possible and clearly explain why the required reports cannot be provided.
