What past winners say....

David Macgill - 2021 Winner

I applied for the Industrial Scientific Award while undertaking my Master of Occupational Hygiene. There was a strong buzz around the upcoming AIOH Conference in Sydney, and how it was an opportunity to connect with professionals in the field and gain insight into the latest developments in occupational hygiene across Australia. The award is designed to support hygienists who might not otherwise be able to attend, and I was incredibly grateful to be selected. The conference was phenomenal! It was held during a pivotal time, with COVID-19 still fresh in everyone’s minds. Seeing how hygienists were approaching and solving challenges related to one of the most visible public health issues of our time was both inspiring and enlightening. The discussions around airborne hazards, risk communication, and innovative control strategies were particularly impactful. Attending the conference helped me build professional connections, deepen my understanding of current hygiene practices, and reaffirm my commitment to the field. It was a turning point in my studies and career, providing both motivation and direction. I’m thankful for the opportunity and the support that made it possible.

Scott Midgley - 2024 Winner

I applied for the Industrial Scientific Conference Package Award to deepen my understanding of occupational hygiene and explore its applications beyond the mining industry. After spending 13 years in underground mining starting as an operator and progressing to over 2.5 years as a hygienist, I was eager to broaden my perspective and challenge myself professionally.

Attending the AIOH 2024 Annual Scientific Conference gave me the bug to learn more. The sessions and discussions sparked a renewed curiosity and helped me realise how much more there is to explore in the field. It wasn’t just about technical knowledge it was about purpose, innovation, and connecting with others who share a passion for health and safety.

Since the conference, I’ve transitioned into a new role as Sydney Water’s corporate hygienist. This opportunity has allowed me to apply my mining experience in a broader context, contribute to public health, and continue growing as a professional. The conference was a turning point that helped me see the bigger picture and inspired me to keep learning and evolving.
