The Active Environmental Solutions Postgraduate Scholarship supports AIOH members in advancing their academic credentials in occupational hygiene. It aims to grow the profession’s knowledge base through postgraduate study, which can include modular classroom learning and practical research, leading to a Master’s or PhD.

The scholarship provides funding to attend an AIOH-accredited postgraduate course in occupational hygiene, or an Australian-based postgraduate program where the main focus is occupational hygiene. The course must be delivered, supervised, or assessed by an experienced occupational hygienist holding Full Member status with the AIOH.

Support can be used for tuition fees, textbooks, and travel directly associated with coursework. Funding may be spread over the length of the course (typically two to three years), but recipients will need to cover any costs beyond the scholarship amount. Details of current funding levels are available from the AIOH Office or the AIOH Awards Committee.

What the scholarship covers

Upto $10,000 covering

  • Tuition fees for an approved Australian postgraduate course
  • Textbooks and study materials
  • Travel costs related to course work
  • Support spread over 2–3 years (not unlimited — recipients may need to cover some costs)

The course must be:

  • Delivered in Australia
  • Focused mainly on occupational hygiene
  • Supervised by a qualified AIOH Full Member

Who can apply?

You must be:

  • A current financial full fee-paying AIOH member
  • Enrolling in or continuing an approved postgraduate course in occupational hygiene
  • Able to begin the course in the year following the application
  • Not an employee or family member of Active Environmental Solutions
  • Not a current AIOH Council member or Awards Committee member

Complete the online application form on the AIOH website

Attach required documents, such as:

  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • Details of your proposed course (costs, duration, supervisor details)
  • Two professional references (preferably occupational hygienists)
  • Examples of your professional work
  • Submit your application by early September

I was encouraged to apply as the research I wanted to do originally was focused on public health before being directed to a more occupational setting for my Masters. I was able to apply the same methods, and it provided the basis for additional work that I completed later with my work. For my project, I wanted to be able to test various scenarios which was centred around people, heat stress and vehicles. This provided me with the ability to hire all the equipment I needed for my project. It was a great help as I was able to complete my project due to having restrictions with contact with people and where I could go due to Covid. Thank you AES for providing this award and allowing recipients to further their studies.

I applied for the award because I wanted to improve my technical knowledge in the field (being only relatively new at the time) and continue towards obtaining full membership and COH status. The scholarship from AES was very generous and allowed me to not only help pay for my course but also to help funding my research project meaning I could do more on a topic I was really interested in!

Applied for the AES scholarship to help kickstart my career in occupational hygiene, and its done so much more then that. So far I have not only got an education from it but I have made life long connections and make strong industry connections. The AES scholarship has made studying in a different state at one of the best university’s (UOW) a dream come true.
