Recent reported fungal infection clusters in Australian hospitals, including incidents involving Aspergillus exposure at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, have highlighted a largely unseen but serious risk within acute healthcare environments. These events, associated with significant patient harm and reported fatalities, underscore how airborne mould exposure can occur without obvious warning signs, particularly for immunocompromised patients. This talk will go to the heart of the issue, examining this often-unseen health risk and the current Australian and international thinking on preventing exposure through improved environmental controls, construction interface management, and infection prevention strategies.

Richard commenced his career in Occupational Health, Hygiene and Safety in the mid 1980s within government, including the Divisional Occupational Hygiene unit and the Londonderry Occupational Safety Centre with SafeWork NSW. During this time, he was mentored by leading pioneers in occupational hygiene and contributed to key committees such as Standards Australia. He later moved into the not for profit and private sectors, where he played a leading role in introducing system based OHS management systems across a wide range of industries including cleaning, security, energy, construction, laboratory services and consulting. Richard has consistently demonstrated a strong ability to lead organisational change and embed practical, prevention focused approaches to worker health and safety.
A strong advocate for education and capability development, Richard has supported the creation of industry training packages and helped establish three accredited Registered Training Organisations delivering nationally funded programs. He has held influential industry roles, including chairing the Cement Concrete and Aggregates Australia OHS Committee and contributing to government advisory groups and legislative reform in NSW. Richard is a Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)® with the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists and a Fellow of both the Australian Institute of Health and Safety and the Australian Institute of Quarrying. He remains committed to strengthening the profession through mentoring and is currently supporting a five year cadetship program guiding future hygienists toward formal qualifications and COH certification.
