Respirable crystalline silica exposure remains a significant health risk in tunnel construction, despite the implementation of dust control measures. This presentation outlines findings from doctoral research that investigated the effectiveness of current dust controls, the challenges workers encounter in minimising exposure, and potential solutions identified by tunnellers. Adopting a sociotechnical perspective, the research highlights opportunities to strengthen silica risk management and enhance worker protection from dust.

Presenter

Dr Frederick Anlimah is an engineer with a strong commitment to protecting workers’ health and safety. He has extensive experience across the mining and consulting sectors, with a focus on workplace health, risk management, auditing and practical safety solutions. His doctoral research investigated respirable crystalline silica exposure in tunnel construction, evaluating the effectiveness of dust control measures and identifying strategies to protect workers from dust. Frederick is currently a WHS Manager at GreenCollar.
