This session delves into the occupational health continuum, examining the intersection of occupational hygiene, occupational medicine, and occupational nursing, with the worker at the centre of all three disciplines. Participants will explore how each profession contributes to disease prevention, health promotion, diagnosis, and treatment, and how they can complement one another to enhance worker outcomes. Using the anticipate, recognise, evaluate, control and confirm framework, the session will break down the approaches of each discipline and demonstrate, through a practical case study, how collaboration across these fields strengthens overall occupational health practice. Attendees will gain insight into multidisciplinary strategies, practical tools for integrated care, and the benefits of working together to anticipate risks, evaluate exposures, and confirm effective controls.
This short presentation is exploring the interface between the three occupational health disciplines of hygiene, nursing and medicine and where each profession interacts with the worker on a ‘health continuum’. This was presented to our occupational nursing and occupational medicine colleagues, and is intended to discussions between our respective professions and ask the question “do we need a more formal collaborative approach to advance health promotion and disease prevention in the workplace..?”.
