Beyond the Lab: An Odyssey from Research Chemist to Boardroom Leader - March  2024

We are excited to have you join us for the first VIC State chapter meeting of 2024.

Embark on an exhilarating journey with Margaret Donnan, a dynamic force in the world of chemistry and governance. From her roots as a research chemist in the pulp and paper industry to her current positions as an Independent Director and the bold Chair of the Risk and Audit Committee at the Battery Stewardship Council, Margaret has carved an extraordinary path. Notably, she's been an active member of the AIOH since 1980, infusing her expertise into the industry.

As a trailblazer, Margaret extends her influence to the Governing Board of the Victorian EPA and takes the helm as the Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee at ARPANSA.

Join us for an electrifying discussion where Margaret unveils the secrets of her journey to board membership, delves into the diverse roles and responsibilities of directors, and sheds light on the intriguing distinctions between board positions and the role of a CEO. Be part of the excitement by sending in your burning questions and engaging in a lively discussion on the night. This is a rendezvous with leadership that you won't want to miss!

Attendees will be invited to send in pre-prepared questions as well as to engage in a discussion on the night. send questions to David Macgill  - david.p.j.b.macgill@gmail.com

Margaret Donnan | MAIOH

Margaret Donnan stands as a distinguished figure in occupational hygiene, having earned her place as one of the inaugural Hall of Fame inductees in 2023 by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene. Joining the AIOH in 1080 and  a career spanning over 40 years, Margaret's professional journey is a testament to her unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation.

Beginning as a Research Chemist, Margaret transitioned to the role of Occupational Hygienist in the Victorian Department of Health. She played a crucial role in legislation development and implementation at WorkSafe Victoria, subsequently becoming the Director of Major Hazards after the Longford Tragedy. In this capacity, she spearheaded the development of Australia's first safety case regulations and played a pivotal role in establishing a new regulator.

Margaret's leadership trajectory continued with her role as CEO at PACIA (Chemistry Australia) and her subsequent entry into the boardroom as a member of the inaugural NOPSA (now NOPSEMA) Regulatory Board in 2005. Currently, she lends her expertise to three boards, serving as the Independent Director and Chair of the Risk and Audit Committee for the Battery Stewardship Council. Margaret is also an integral part of the Governing Board of the Victorian EPA and holds the position of Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee at ARPANSA. Margaret's induction into the Hall of Fame in 2023 is a well-deserved recognition of her outstanding contributions to occupational hygiene and governance.
