Occupational Hygienist

Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) | Gladstone, Queensland

Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) is seeking an experienced Occupational Hygienist to establish and lead its occupational hygiene program across a complex port and heavy industrial environment.

Reporting to the Safety Manager, this newly created permanent position offers the opportunity to shape GPC’s approach to occupational hygiene, strengthen exposure risk management and influence meaningful improvements to workforce health and safety.

The opportunity

You will take ownership of the occupational hygiene program, working closely with operational leaders, employees, contractors and technical specialists to identify exposure risks and implement effective controls. With strong organisational support and access to specialist consultants, you will have the autonomy to drive improvements, influence decision-making and build occupational hygiene capability across the business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing GPC’s occupational hygiene program, including monitoring, risk profiling and exposure assessments.
  • Assessing and managing risks associated with respirable crystalline silica, airborne contaminants, noise, vibration, heat stress and chemical exposures.
  • Evaluating engineering controls, ventilation systems and personal protective equipment to minimise exposure risks.
  • Interpreting monitoring data, identifying trends and recommending practical, evidence-based control measures.
  • Developing occupational hygiene procedures, management plans and reporting within GPC’s ISO 45001-accredited Safety Management System.
  • Providing technical advice, conducting audits and supporting investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Engaging with the workforce, coaching leaders and delivering training to strengthen occupational hygiene awareness and practice.

About you

You are a technically capable Occupational Hygienist who can work autonomously, build strong stakeholder relationships and translate complex technical information into practical solutions. You are comfortable engaging with workers and senior leaders alike, influencing decisions and driving improvements in a hands-on operational environment.

To be successful, you will bring:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in occupational hygiene and at least five years’ experience in a large, complex operating environment.
  • Strong knowledge of occupational hygiene monitoring, exposure assessment, relevant legislation and Australian Standards.
  • Experience developing and implementing occupational hygiene programs, interpreting data and recommending effective controls.
  • Strong communication, consultation and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Membership, or eligibility for full membership, of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH).

A Master’s degree in Occupational Hygiene and proficiency in ChemAlert will be highly regarded. A current C-class driver’s licence is essential, along with a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) or the ability to obtain one.

Why join GPC?

This is an opportunity to build and influence an occupational hygiene program with genuine scope to make a difference. You will work across diverse operational environments, engage with senior decision-makers and help shape how occupational health risks are managed into the future.

The position offers a competitive salary and relocation package, a 35-hour working week, one rostered day off per month and flexible working arrangements.

Based in Gladstone, Queensland, this role offers the opportunity to combine meaningful professional impact with a coastal lifestyle.

If you are ready to take ownership of an occupational hygiene function and deliver lasting improvements across a major port operation, we would welcome your interest.
