AIOH Submission – Indoor Air Quality Inquiry
We welcome the opportunity to contribute to the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into indoor air quality (IAQ). Despite Australians spending approximately 90% of their time indoors, and substantial evidence of adverse health, economic and safety impacts from poor IAQ1, this issue is largely unregulated in Australia, and in much need of attention. Poor indoor air quality arises from a combination of indoor and outdoor sources. Indoor sources include combustion activities (such as cooking, heating, smoking, and candles), building materials, cleaning products, mould, dust resuspension, electrical equipment, and human occupants, while outdoor pollutants from sources including traffic, industry, bushfires, pollen and dust, enter buildings through ventilation systems, gaps, and infiltration.
