(25 October 1945 – 7 April 2026)
It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing of Dr Barry Chesson AM, a remarkable leader, mentor, and lifelong contributor to Occupational Hygiene and the AIOH. We remember Barry for his dedication, warmth, and the lasting impact he had on our profession.
Barry joined the AIOH in 1980, became a Fellow in 2004, and served in many roles including President (2012), WA State Liaison Officer, and Chair of the Communications Committee. His service and achievements were recognised nationally with the Member of the Order of Australia in 2016 and the Celebration of Achievement Award in 2015.
Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Barry worked with Alcoa, Chevron, and his consultancy, Occupational Hygiene Solutions Pty Ltd, providing guidance across Australia and internationally. Always polite and soft spoken, and rarely seen without a smile, he inspired countless colleagues and students, sharing his knowledge generously and fostering the next generation of occupational hygienists. In recognition of his exceptional mentoring, the AIOH has established a fitting award in his honour.
Barry also contributed to education and policy, serving as Adjunct Associate Professor at ECU and as a long-term Expert Member of the Commission for Occupational Safety and Health. His dedication to advancing worker health, mentoring professionals, and supporting the AIOH leaves a lasting legacy.
We extend our deepest condolences to Barry’s family, friends and to all AIOH members who have been touched by his guidance, generosity, and friendship. He will be sincerly missed.
Sincerely,
Dr Kelly Johnstone President 2026
