Third Edition Now Available, Simplified Occupational Hygiene Risk Management Strategies

The Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists is pleased to release the third edition of Simplified Occupational Hygiene Risk Management Strategies, updated for the first time in six years.

This practical guidebook provides occupational hygienists and WHS or OHS practitioners with clear, foundational tools to manage occupational health risks including biological, chemical, ergonomic, radiation and other physical hazards such as noise and vibration. It supports hazard identification, exposure characterisation, risk assessment, and control and management strategies.

Recognising that exposure assessment and risk assessment cannot reasonably be separated in occupational hygiene practice, this guidebook sits alongside the companion publication Occupational Hygiene Monitoring and Compliance Strategies by Grantham and Firth, also published by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists.

The guide is intentionally generic and industry independent. It does not prescribe a uniform risk management system, acknowledging that effective systems must reflect an organisation’s size, structure, services and operational context. It encourages integration of health risk assessment with safety, environmental and broader business risk processes to strengthen prioritisation and control outcomes.

Designed to support baseline and screening level assessments, this guidebook does not replace professional judgement, quantitative exposure assessment or regulatory obligations. Where uncertainty exists, conservative assumptions should be applied and escalation to a Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)® or other relevant specialist is recommended.

This third edition has been developed for the AIOH by Ross Di Corleto, Ian Firth and Robert Golec, continuing an important body of work supporting worker health across Australia.

The authors also acknowledge the significant contributions of earlier editions, including Deborah van Zanten, Gerard Tiernan, Kim Ng, Jaemie Wilson, and members of the AIOH Technical Advisory Subcommittee.

The third edition is now available.
