Understanding cleaner exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds in educational settings
Quaternary ammonium compounds, commonly known as Quats, are widely used in disinfectants across schools, universities and other educational facilities. While effective at controlling microbes, increasing evidence suggests occupational exposure may present health risks for cleaning staff.
A joint research project between GCG and The University of Queensland, funded by the AIOH Foundation, explored real-world exposure to Quats and led to the development of Australia’s first NATA-accredited method for measuring airborne levels. The article outlines the findings of this pilot study and what they may mean for cleaning practices and worker health in educational environments.
