A HARDCOPY guidebook provides thermal stress guidance that has been developed for the Australian environment.
Twelve years on, the world looks very different. New technology allows us to monitor physiological responses without invasive methods, and climate change is raising temperatures across the country. With all of this in mind, the 2025 edition arrives at exactly the right time.

The AIOH first stepped into the heat stress space back in 2001, when a dedicated working group set out to create practical, Australian-focused guidance for managing risks in hot environments. That work led to the first publication in 2003, followed by an updated edition in 2013 that shifted from a strict standard to a more accessible, guidance-based approach.
The core purpose stays the same. The documents offer clear, grounded guidance to help workers, employers and occupational health practitioners understand and manage heat stress in Australian workplaces. The updated guidance is presented in two parts.• Part A gives a simple overview designed for readers without a technical background• Part B provides deeper detail and references for practitioners working in the field
While not intended as a definitive rulebook, the guidance brings together practical recommendations and trusted references to support safer decision-making in hot conditions.
We also recognise the contributions of Gerald V Coles and Joseph Maté, whose earlier work helped lay the foundation for this latest revision.
This third edition has been developed for the AIOH by Ross Di Corleto, Ian Firth and Vinod Gopaldasani, continuing an important line of work that supports the wellbeing of workers across Australia.
